Imagine

Few times in my life has something ever touched me like John Lennon's song Imagine. It's such a simple and honest song. Lennon knew when to "leave it alone". He knew when to let the words be the entire song, no big musical arrangement, just pure sentiment. I don't proclaim to be an expert on the career of John Lennon. I am an admirer of the man who could make you stop what you're doing and listen.

Many people feel as I do about John Lennon's music. The picture was taken at the John Lennon Memorial in Central Park. In the center is one simple word, "Imagine". Can you imagine a world without greed, poverty, or war. He did.

Imagine

Imagine there's no heaven,

It's easy if you try,

No hell below us,

Above us only sky,

Imagine all the people

living for today...

Imagine there's no countries,

It isn't hard to do,

Nothing to kill or die for,

No religion too,

Imagine all the people

living life in peace...

Imagine no possessions,

I wonder if you can,

No need for greed or hunger,

A brotherhood of man,

Imagine all the people

Sharing all the world...

You may say Im a dreamer,

but Im not the only one,

I hope some day you'll join us,

And the world will live as one.

What is the Language of God?

Since it appears that I'm an existential thinker, I will blog existentially today. After the big Ahhhhhh elicited by the picture of that precious child, read the quote under the picture. It's a quote from Albert Einstein, one of my heroes. Albert was not a very religious man but he was a very spiritual one. He believed that miracles were all around us. To Albert Einstein the cosmos itself was a miracle.

I have worked in medicine for many years. During that time I have met many fellow scientists...some were doctors, some were PhD researchers, some were nuclear physicists. I have found that the majority of them had a strong belief in God but almost none of them went to church. Why is this? It's simple. The churches we are all used to, the one's we grew up with, all ask the same thing. They want you to check your brain at the door. Don't argue with them. Don't ask questions they can't answer. Just believe unconditionally. We scientists can't do that. We need proof. I once asked a priest to explain to me why God felt the need to create man. "If he is indeed the Alpha and Omega, why would he/she need anything else?" He thought for a moment and said, "God is love. Love can't survive unless it is returned. God needed something to give love to and to return it back to him." I thought it sounded pretty good until I really thought about it. It seemed selfish to create something only to "complete the circuit".

Do I believe there is a God? Absolutely. But I don't believe we would know him/her if they sat down beside us. We are jaded by a violent and paranoid society.

The BBC has a wonderful article on Molecular Memory. It appears that scientists can store up to 1000 bits of information inside a molecule. If that's possible then why can't our own molecules store bits of our memories, our very conscience, within them? Perhaps this could explain things like past lives. I don't know the answers, but I'm willing to entertain the possibilities. We all should ask ourselves if we are open to the possibilities.

An Existential Thinker

What do Leonardo Da Vinci, Martin Luther King, and I have in common? According to the BBC, we're all Existential Thinkers. We wonder about the big questions in life. We wonder about the human condition, the world and our place in it. Recent research has shown that genius comes in different forms. There are the Einsteins of the world, but there are also Picassos and Thoreaus out there. Each a genius in his own way. You too can find out what kind of thinker you are. I suspect that most of us know but it's still fun to find out. The BBC has an entire area of their website devoted just to quizzes. What kind of thinker are you?

Random Thoughts of Chaos

After many years of self discovery, I have to come to one conclusion. I'm weird. I'm different, odd, an anomaly of sorts. There are things that I wonder about while driving down the road that I'm pretty sure my fellow drivers aren't thinking about. This post is a result of one of those ponderings on Interstate 75.

I have come to conclusion, through miles of deduction, that randomness does not exist. That's right, I said it, it ain't happenin'. The theory of randomness states that basically there are occurrences in all things that can't be predicted mathematically. I say....bullshit. Yes, that's right, I said it. Throughout history, each generation thinks that they are the best thing since the beginning of time. We are no exception. We think we know it all. If we can't prove it, then it doesn't exist...right? (let's all say it together) BULLSHIT!! Yes, that's right, we said it.

You may ask what research I have done to prove this groundbreaking theory. Uhhhh....none. It seems common sense to me. Many years ago the Chaos Theory of Mathematics was proposed. What a champagne toasting day that was! Since then(circa 1900) the Chaos Theory has been used to predict weather and even was the reason the first computer was created. But you know, over time, we have found many things that we once thought random are actually not. The Chaos Theory itself relies on order to make predictions....freaky huh? There are those who think that the lottery may be predictable if we can find the right equation.

Why in hell did you write about this, you say. I'll tell you. If there are mathematical models for everything then doesn't that imply intelligence? If it implies intelligence, then what intelligence? I once told a friend of mine, science and math are not in opposition to a Supreme Conscience, they are the language that the Supreme Conscience uses to speak to us.

See? Told you I was weird....

The Chaos Theory

...In the beginning, Hesiod says, there was Chaos, vast and dark. -Homer

The last few days have reaffirmed my belief in the Chaos Theory. I'm not referring to the Chaos Theory of Mathematics, I'm referring to the Chaos Theory of the Soul. The theory that states that one's universe reflects the atmosphere of the soul. This means that if you are at peace spiritually, then you will have a peaceful existence. One the other hand, if you have mental and spiritual chaos within, the outside world will reflect that back to you.

I have seen this theory in action at work this week. A couple of coworkers have the chaos thing going on. Everywhere they show up the work environment becomes tense. Rumors get started. People start arguing with other people. It's all due to the cloud of chaos that surrounds these people. They create disarray and discontentment and spread it around like pixy dust. Everyone gets swept up in their drama, and dare I say...untruths. We all work with someone who fits the description.

So what do you do to fix it? Homicide....ummmm...too messy. Arguing with them produces little effect since they tend to "jump horses" during an argument. "Jumping horses" refers to the arguing tactic of switching subjects and then sides in an argument. You just can't get them to pick a side and stick with it. What I have found that works with Chaos Bringers is simple. Ignore them. When that fails, walk away. When that fails, bring in a third party. When all else fails, remember, because of their type A personality, they'll die first...... :)

If Wishes Came True...

Happy New Year to everyone!! (Socokitten this pic is for you). Just like at Disneyland, people all over the world celebrated the beginning of a New Year, complete with new expectations and new problems. Here are some of my own wishes for the New Year.....

1) I wish that our troops could come home from the illegal war that they are forced to fight and give their lives for.

2) I wish that people would stop freaking out about the damn bird flu. There are hundreds of viral diseases out there that already kill people. Why don't we concentrate on them?

3) I wish that Northern Ireland would know lasting peace this year. War begets war and hate begets hate, there are no exceptions. Enough have died, let it be.

4) I wish that, instead of disease, we would have mass outbreaks of compassion. Compassion for our fellow man. There should not be any hunger on this planet. No one should go hungry, anywhere, anytime.

5) I wish that we would see that our enemy isn't Muslim, Hindu, Pakistani, Jewish, or Black. Our enemy is ignorance. It is ignorance that starts war. It is ignorance that breeds poverty and disease. Ignorance of one another, of basic health concepts, just plain, unadulterated ignorance.

I leave you with this New Year's Poem. May 2006 be the best year yet for all of mankind.

It's New Years again, and I would expect,
It's time for agendas, and time to reflect.
A time to take inventory, of the year just past,
And a time to confront, our errors at last.
A time to recall, those no longer here,
A time to remember, a time to revere.
A time to resolve, for the year now new,
To change or adjust, those things we will do.
A time to change habits, and really we should,
convert them all please, from bad ones to good,
A time to thank God, who made night and morning,
To see a new day, and enjoy a new dawning,
It's time for us all, to seize the gold fleece,
Release sparkles of stardust, of love and new peace.
A time to embrace, all those we hold dear,
To hold them, and wish them, "A Happy New Year!"

Above all else, readers, I wish you humor, without it, everything is too much.
