The Black Heart

Hell is truth seen too late. -Anatole France
I watch the news everyday only to see a repeat of yesterday's stories. Yes, the bodies being taken away as victims of war, change daily. But the story is always the same. The major players in the story these days are Hezbollah and Israel. The people of Lebanon are caught in the middle between two ancient warring enemies. Contrary to what most people think, Hezbollah control's Lebanon but most of Lebanon's citizens are not Hezbollah members. Stuck in the middle with no way out.
Why all the killing and destruction? I really don't understand. What is to be gained by destroying one another? Now there is discussion that the environmental impact of the fighting may be long lasting. So that leads one to ask, "What are you fighting for when ground beneath you is now Barron?" There is nothing left to claim.
I often wonder if the war machine of the Middle East can stop. It appears that fighting and dying is a way of life. So much is invested in the tools of war that it seems a waste to not use it. Peace in the Middle East is not profitable. What would the people of the Middle East do if they couldn't hate their neighbors? Would they be at a loss for something to do? What would drive their existence if not to fight and die in a Holy War?
